Alright Oppo, I bought an expensive brown thing. I hear we like that here? I don’t get to take it for a test drive until Saturday, but I am eager to see how it goes! (And sorry, no, I didn’t buy a brown VW Type 181... I apologize.)

The whiskey in question is Little Book Chapter 02, the second in a yearly series produced by Jim Beam by what appears to be their master distiller in training. I guess the first one was pretty polarizing, but unique. Sounds like the second one is more accessible, but still very polarizing.

Kinja'd!!!

This, but dustier

Here is a long story about how I ended up here

Every year for our anniversary, the boyfriend and I get a nice bottle of something. This year: whiskey, but it didn’t quite go to plan...

In the past we’ve traditionally either champagne, prosecco, or sometimes red wine. Starting with our 10 year, however, we opted for a bottle of cognac. This year, after being somewhat underwhelmed by the bottle of Dom we had last year we’re doing bourbon.

This presented some complication as unlike, say, Scotch or Irish Whisk(e)y, which prices can go remarkably high, bourbon seems happiest in the $40-$80 range. Not that price matters, of course.

ANYWAY , I say that to say the first suggestion was grabbing a bottle of the lower tier Pappy Van Winkle. Cursory search said that shouldn’t be a problem and they make a number of types in my price range.

I was laughed out of the liquor store.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Ok so... plan B: Go to the store and see what they have.

And with some light googling while standing in front of the shelf, we bought this the Little Book.

The decision process was basically:

Is in price range: YES.

Do I like Bookers: YES.

Does it review poorly: NO.

Sold.

In a sea of neverending bourbon and whiskey releases, it’s refreshing to see something different. A lighter flavor profile highlighted by sweet notes of fruit, butterscotch, and honey with floral undertones, Little Book Chapter 02 is an approachable whiskey that pushes beyond the boundaries of the expected for a whiskey marketed towards bourbon fans.

- !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I am both nervous and interested in seeing how it goes! The reviews say it can be very polarizing and is quite unique. I didn’t notice at the time that it does have corn whiskey in it, of which I am not a fan. Admittedly it is 40 year corn whiskey, but meh.

Plan is to try it neat, with water, and with ice. I assume at that point I’ll no longer be able to stand so... we’ll see where it goes from there.

Maybe I’ll try and keep it together and update the fine people of... this place.

For anyone interested, here are our past picks:

Something Cheap (Asti Spumanti?)

Next Pinot Noir 2006

Dom Perignon Vintage 2003 (Can you tell when I graduated!? haha)

Adami Adrian Gabriel Prosecco

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1998

Marc Hébrart Champagne Premier Cru Brut Mareuil-Sur-Ay

Blackbird Vineyards Proprietary Red 2006

Bellavista Franciacorta Gran Cuvée Brut Pas Operé 2005

Moet & Chandon Nectar Imperial

Remy Martin XO Cognac

Dom Perignon Vintage 2009

Little Book Chapter 2 “Noe Simple Task”

And no I didn’t have this written down before, but we do have most of the bottles kicking around the house.

Kinja'd!!!

The top shelf of the liquor cabinet which, funny enough, is indeed the top shelf.

Yes, but preferably at least 10 years old and on its third or fourth owner by this point.

I find that things like these are less polarizing when one open s one’s mind and doesn’t decide what to expect.  Enjoy and report back.

I’ve got quite the collection but Little Book Ch 2 has been eluding me for retail. Should find it here soon though.

What is that answer?  I’m curious, myself.  It seems like a gimmick, but it has me intrigued.

Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1998

I had a bottle of that vintage for my 25th birthday, 2015, and it was fantastic.

Enjoy! In New Hampshire you can search the liquor store inventory on the web. You can see what store has what you’re looking for and how many. It’s amazing, and also dangerous if you have time and money on your hands. Thankfully, I have little of either. But I have used it recently to locate a good bottle of Rye Whiskey I really like that’s also not that expensive.

It was really good... but I honestly preferred the 2003 Dom. Then again this was back in... 2011? So maybe the Veuve benefited from some extra aging.

Neither of us are big Irish Whiskey fans, sadly.  Probably could find some we’d like, but the task seems daunting... and expensive.

Nice. I haven’t had a chance to try The Little Book yet, but I also am a fan of Bookers. Lately I’ve been really into Jefferson (Very small batch and Ocean) and Old Forrester (Reg., Single Barrel, 1920) . The OF 1920 was delicious and strong at 115 proof, but they’re all good.

Cool!  I’ll keep an eye out.  I had a brief, intense love affair with 1776... all of them... but haven’t been loving anything too much these days.  Honestly have been drinking mostly gin, vodka, and absinthe the last couple months.

I’ve gone through phases of all of them too, but these days its usually either beer, bourbon, or whiskey drinks, with the occasion dip into the brandy pool. I’m just a sucker for dark liquors.

Oh man I do love a brandy stinger at the end of the night.  So smooth.  Honestly I’ve, weirdly, been enjoying Stoli on the rocks.  Sounds weird, but it is just sort of... nice.  And intoxicating.

Looks like the standard is $ 80 here and cask strength is $ 100. Is it the cask strength you have?

I recently started drinking Jameson. Mainly because I saw that it was a pretty popular drink on Banshee. This past weekend I came across a bottle of Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition. I guess it’s a whiskey finished in barrels seasoned with beer.

It’s pretty good, and not bad straight. Although, I prefer to go on the rocks with a bit of water.

I would assume it benefited from the aging. Although, I will say that I’ve had both an 04 D om and an 04 Veuve in 2014/2015 respectively and I think I slightly preferred the Veuve. Could also be just different tastes. Then again, I had an 06 Veuve for new years this year and it wasn’t nearly as good as the 3 other ones I mentioned.
